PETROL ENGINE Describe First Petrol Engine

PETROL ENGINE

NICOLAUS AUGUST OTTO and EUGEN LANGEN invented petrol engine .NICOLAUS AUGUST OTTO and EUGEN LANGEN first practical petrol engine built in 1876 in Germany. although there had been earlier attempts by Etienne Lenoir in 1860, Siegfried Marcus in 1864 and George Brayton in 1873

THEMODYNAMIC CYCLE ፦

Some petrol engine have 4 stroke,  Otto cycle, Two stroke cycle, Miller cycle and Atkinson cycle they do not produce air pollution.

ENGINE TYPES .

Most powerful petrol piston engine  are four types .
1) Straight engines
2) V engines
3) Flat engines
4) W engine

Straight Engine .

It is also known as inline engine and have  multi cylinder piston engine . These cylinder are arranged in single row, rather than radially or in two or more cylinder banks .

Overview .

It is easier to build rather than others. It uses one cylinder head rather than two it is narrower than flat engine or V engine. They are longer and can be taller .

It is depend on the number of cylinder and the firing interval.

V  Engine .

It is also known as V engine. It has two cylinder banks and usually have with the same number of cylinder in each bank, connected with crankshaft. It is arranged in V shape .

Flat Engine .

It is also known as horizontally opposed engines. It is piston engine where the cylinder are located on either side of a central Crankshaft. Each cylinder has two piston sharing a central combustion chamber

The most common configuration of flat engine is a boxer engine.

The first flat engine was built by KARL BENZ .It is used in aviation, motorcycle and automobile application. It is less common in cars than straight engine.

Overview .

The advantage of flat engines are short in length, low centre of mass, and suitability for air cooling. It has better primary balance than straight engine and disadvantage are increased in width and the need to have two cylinder heads. It have better primary balance

W Engine .

It is also known as broad arrow engine. A W engine is a type of piston engine where three or four cylinder banks use the same crankshaft resembling the letter W when viewed from the front. W engine have 3 banks of cylinder.

Overview .

Due to their shape resembling The British Government broad arrow property mark.

The most common W type engine is bank type with Volkswagen Group experimenting with Passat W8 and it's 4.0 litre W engine are significally less common than V engine, W engine is typically shorter but wider in Volkswagen's case this allows for premium packaging in engine compartment intended for 6 and 8 cylinder engine
